About
My name is Cemre Kara, a graduate of the ArtScience Bachelor's programme at KABK in the Hague, Netherlands in 2021. My artistic practice spans various mediums, including live performances, sensory experiences, and food design. During my studies, my focus was on exploring the connection between table manners and the prevention of violence at the dinner table. Through a series of performative dinner scenarios, I challenged accepted etiquettes surrounding Western dining. Drawing inspiration from classical painting, theater, performance, and video art. The final outcome of the project received both the ArtScience Department Award and the iii Research Residency Award.
For a few years my projects are on the relationship between humans and kitchen technology, this gave me inspiration to work on creating new tools as an artistic practice. My performances and installations aim to explore the social and political contexts of food culture.
Following years, I embarked on an artistic research project called [dis]comfort food during my residency at the iii art center in The Hague. [dis]comfort food is a participatory performance/ dinner event where the audience is invited to use experimental dining utensils in a Western dinner setting to question accepted table manners. The project combines design and contemporary art while also examining colonial practices related to eating utensils and Western behavior at the dining table.
